A 55-year-old Canadian man has come under fire for allegedly burning one million dollars in cash because he didn’t want to give any money to his ex wife and his children.
Bruce McConville an Ottowa businessman and politician who was a candidate for the mayoral seat but didn’t win has been sentenced to 30 days behind bars for refusing to file an affidavit regarding his finances and instead claiming he burnt over $1 million in cash to keep his ex-wife from having access to his money.
According to reports by The Ottawa Citizen, McConville sold several businesses and properties without the knowledge of his ex wife.
He then withdrew the money in cash and allegedly burnt it in two separate bonfires.
He reportedly burnt $743,000 on September 23 and $296,000 on December 15 2019.
It is heartbreaking that Bruce did all of this to avoid paying child support and spousal support.
The court and the Canadian government knew Bruce made secret sales and wanted details of the sales to be made public.
The court requested for his financial disclosure affidavit because they wanted to find out exactly how much money Mr McConville is expected to pay every month to support his wife and his family.
Bruce was also instructed by the court not to sell any properties while the case was going on but he defied the court’s order to submit his financial records and also he completely disregarded their instructions not to sell any properties while this case was ongoing, but he did so by selling a house to his former accountant.
The presiding judge Superior Court Justice Kevin Philips was shocked when Bruce McConville’s claimed he burnt the money.
He asked him to explain what exactly he meant by saying he destroyed the money and Brown replied that It’s not something that he would normally do.
He also claimed that he is not someone who is extremely materialistic. He claimed to be frugal which is why his business lasted for 31 years.
Well, Judge Philip wasn’t buying the story. He didn’t believe the business man will burn such a huge amount of money just to spite his ex wife and children.
The judge told him that he didn’t believe him.
In the Judge words, he said; “I don’t believe you. I don’t trust you. I don’t think you’re honest,”. “I find what you have done to be morally reprehensible because what you claim to have done willfully and directly undermines the interests of your children.”
In his judgement, the judge determined that it was very clear that Bruce McConville deliberately set out to thwart the court and the administration of justice.
The judge decided to send him to Innes Road Jail for 30 days to give him time to think about how he wanted the court case to proceed.
The judge also warned him that if he continues to lie and disobey court orders, the next punishment he will face will make this 30 days in jail seem like a childs play.
In the meantime, Judge Philips ordered McConville to pay $2,000 a day, or $14,000 a week, in fines directly to his wife until he meets court requirements and coughs up the truth about his finances.
The money is also separate from any spousal or child support he’ll owe.
I bet he wishes he’d just been honest in the first place now! Bruce must really hate his ex wife so much if he really didn’t want her and their children to have any of that money. Wow talk about taking pettiness to a whole new level.
Do you believe Bruce really burnt the money?
What do you think his wife and children must have done to him to warrant this level of hatred?
